The probation period is a short period when you start work in a new job during which you and your employer can end your contract if things do not go well. A chance to get to know each other The probation period gives you a chance to get to know each other. You can make sure the work suits you. Your employer can check you are a good fit for the job. During this period, you and your employer can terminate your contract without giving notice . The probation period must be mentioned in your contract. If it is not, then no probation period applies. Probation period with a permanent contract If you have a permanent contract (a contract with no end date), the probation period must not be more than two months.

Burgerlijk Wetboek Boek 7, Artikel 652
1. Indien partijen een proeftijd overeenkomen, is deze voor beide partijen gelijk. 2. De proeftijd wordt schriftelijk overeengekomen. 3. Bij het aangaan van een arbeidsovereenkomst voor onbepaalde tijd kan een proeftijd worden overeengekomen van ten hoogste twee maanden.
